Investment Potential of Sumba Island
An overview of Sumba Island as a potential investment destination, covering tourism, infrastructure, and development prospects.
In February, our team conducted a working trip to Sumba Island — a destination that partners from Jakarta recommend considering as a potential investment location. During the week, we explored the main tourist areas, visited key hotels, and assessed the current level of infrastructure on the island.
Sumba leaves a strong impression thanks to its nature and unique cultural identity. The island features pristine beaches comparable to those of Nusa Dua, yet still retains the feeling of a wild and largely undeveloped territory. This combination of natural beauty and authenticity makes Sumba stand out among other Indonesian destinations.
However, from a development perspective, there is currently little visible growth momentum. Most of the existing hotels were built between three and ten years ago, and only a few major new projects are under construction. The island’s economy remains largely agricultural, local infrastructure is limited, and European-style dining options are generally available only within a small number of hotels.
At present, investor interest is mainly focused on purchasing inexpensive land as a long-term asset. However, the growth in land value here depends almost entirely on government policy. If Indonesia begins actively investing in infrastructure development, private capital will likely follow.
If that does not happen, the island could remain in its current state for many years. For this reason, investments in Sumba today should be viewed more as a long-term bet on the future rather than a short-term development opportunity.
